Five years ago today I was in the hospital on the U of M Campus. I was about to have a very heavy dose of chemo flow through my body. I was having a stem cell transplant. The day before, I had the nurses shave my head since my hair would be falling out anyway. Six months earlier I had been diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma. I was told I could live a good five to ten years with this. I had surgery, radiation, chemo and now a stem cell transplant. I didn't fully understand what this would do to my body, what it would do to my immune system. All I know is that this is what the doctors suggested I do, so I was doing it. What I also didn't know or at least understand, was that they didn't expect me to be cured. I had put the five to ten years comment out of my mind. When they saw my test results after the stem cell transplant, I was initially congratulated on such good results because that "never happens," but in the next breath I was told "Don't be fooled, it's still there." I can't say I regret having it done since I can say for the past five years I've been in remission, but I also don't think I would be in remission without the steps I took for myself.
I spent that six months with a positive outlook, I got the rest I needed. I had friends give me Reiki sessions and I did Self Reiki. I cut sugar out of my diet. I was already gluten free and dairy free but I had a long way to go in eating healthier. In the last five years I've worked on that.
For those who don't know what Reiki is, it's a Japanese form of energy healing. The healing energy comes from God or the Universe, it flows through the healer to you. I believe this played a big part in my healing journey.
Today, I celebrate five years of remission. I celebrate beating the odds. I celebrate being alive, being healthy and being able to help others on their healing journey.
I've started a new Private Facebook Group called Healing in Progress Group to help share some of the things I've learned over the past five years. If this interests you, just submit a request to join. I have a page by the same name, so be sure to grab the Group.
